As a pediatric dietitian, I often get questions about how nutrition affects overall health and those luscious locks your little ones sport. So, grab a cuppa and let us chat about nourishing your child's hair from the inside out!


1. Diet for Long, Healthy, Silky Hair

Think of a garden: to grow strong and beautiful plants (or in this case, your child's hair), you need to provide the right nutrients. Here are some key players:


EPA: This mighty omega-3 fatty acid is like a superhero for hair health. You can find it in fatty fish like salmon, trout, and mackerel. Not only does EPA promote hair growth, but it also helps to keep the scalp hydrated and happy. Don't worry if your child does not like fish or is a vegetarian! You can still sneak in those essential omega-3 fatty acids by incorporating plant-based sources like flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts into their diet. These vegetarian-friendly options provide a boost of EPA, supporting not just hair health but also overall well-being.

Zinc: Don't underestimate the power of this mineral! Zinc is crucial in hair tissue growth and repair, keeping those strands strong and resilient. Encourage your child to munch on zinc-rich foods like lean meats like egg, chicken and seafood, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Nuts and Seeds: Snack time just got even better! Nuts and seeds are packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that nourish the hair follicles from within. Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are all excellent choices to sprinkle on salads, and yoghurt, or enjoy as a standalone snack.
