Chia Seeds: The Powerhouse of Omega-3 fatty acids

Do you often feel anxious, irritated, have trouble concentrating or sleeping, or often feel dehydrated? Wondering why you experience them? Well you may be suffering from Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency.

You might be thinking about what omega-3 fatty acids are? What are their sources, what it does to your body. They are polyunsaturated fatty acids that will protect us from severe chronic and inflammatory diseases, heart diseases, depression, anxiety, and many more. They play a vital role as they surround each cell in your body and are thus crucial for our brain as well as your entire body.


So how to get it? The most common and easily available omega-3 source is chia seeds. Chia seed is a superfood and is also known as the powerhouse of omega-3. It is not only rich in omega-3 but is packed with appreciable amounts of nutrients and bioactive compounds. They do wonders for your body.

Bhatty et al. (1993) reported that chia oil is highly unsaturated with 83% polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of which 18% is linoleic acid and 64% of α-linolenic acid. It is rich in all essential amino acids and is helpful in the prevention and management of hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension.


You can just add 20 grams or about 2 tbsp chia seeds to smoothies, soups, salads, jams, normal water, cookies, etc. to get the required benefits. It is best to not have chia seeds in dry form as it can cause swallowing problems and also excess intake can cause mild stomach discomfort.
