5 Common Nutritional Deficiencies in Picky Eaters

Updated: Feb 20

Picky eaters are individuals who are selective about the foods they eat and often avoid certain foods or entire food groups. Nutritional deficiencies can occur in picky eaters who limit their intake of certain foods.

Some common nutritional deficiencies that may occur in picky eaters include:

  1. Iron deficiency: Picky eaters who avoid red meat, beans, and iron-rich millets like Ragi and leafy green vegetables may not get enough iron in their diet, leading to anaemia.

  2. Calcium deficiency: Picky eaters who avoid dairy products and leafy green vegetables may not get enough calcium, which is important for bone health.

  3. Vitamin D deficiency: Picky eaters who avoid fatty fish and fortified dairy products may not get enough vitamin D, which is important for bone health and immune system function.

  4. Vitamin B12 deficiency: Picky eaters who avoid animal products may not get enough vitamin B12, which is important for nervous system function.

  5. Fibre deficiency: Picky eaters who avoid fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may not get enough fibre, which is important for digestive health.

Whether supplements are required for picky eaters depends on the individual's specific nutritional needs and dietary habits.

Picky eaters may have a limited intake of certain nutrients due to their selective food choices. For example, someone who avoids fruits and vegetables may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health. In such cases, supplements may be necessary to fill the nutrient gap and prevent deficiencies.

However, it's important to note that supplements should not be used as a replacement for a healthy and balanced diet. Whole foods provide a range of nutrients that are not found in supplements, including fibre, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. Therefore, it's best to encourage picky eaters to include a variety of nutrient-dense foods in their diet and to use supplements only as a supplement to their diet if necessary.

If you are concerned about your nutrient intake, it's a good idea to speak with a registered dietitian or healthcare provider who can provide individualized advice based on your specific needs and health status.

Picky eaters need to consume a variety of foods to ensure they are getting all the necessary nutrients. Parents of picky eaters should consult with a paediatrician or registered dietitian to ensure their child's diet is meeting their nutritional needs.
